AT ESSEX DRAWING STUDIO Rm. 227:

You will be viewing a large installation that contains positive and negative space—>our installation is in the corner closest to the computer lab and contains wheels and wooden benches.

Use your viewfinder (3 x 4″ cutout rectangular space) to locate a cropped view of our in-class installation

While looking through your viewfinder, draw two small thumbnail sketches inside sketchbook to test out two different compositions, for example one horizontal, one vertical. Aim for a composition that has unique positive/negative shapes and triangular spaces.

Select the more interesting thumbnail sketch and begin transferring large, loose, flexible gestural sketch onto your 18 x 24″ charcoal/mixed media paper. After gesture sketch, blocking out of basic shapes, test clock angles  and pencil measurement proportions. Make adjustments as needed, moving objects, checking one part relative to another part. Finally: clean up all extra gesture lines and reduce drawing to singular OUTLINE of FLAT positive and negative shapes and spaces.

***DO NOT ADD INK yet!!! We will begin working with ink in-class next Wednesday. Please bring ink supplies if you have them.
